Bifocal Lenses

Bifocal lenses are engineered for reliable dual-prescription correction, featuring a distinct, dedicated lower segment for reading and a clear upper zone for distance, offering maximum mid-range angle sharpness with zero intermediate distortion. There are several types of bifocal lenses available at Optica Rwanda,  all fitted by our qualified optometrists in-store. Book a free eye test at your nearest Optica Rwanda branch.

What are bifocal lenses and how do they function?

Bifocal lenses feature two distinct prescriptions within a single lens. The main upper portion of the lens corrects your distance vision (like driving or watching TV), while a visible, shaped segment at the bottom provides dedicated magnification for close-up tasks like reading or looking at your phone.

What makes bifocals different from Progressive lenses?

Unlike progressive lenses, bifocal glasses lenses have a clearly visible dividing line between the distance and near zones - there is no gradual transition. Progressives offer a seamless transition across multiple distances with no visible line, while bifocals provide a distinct, immediate switch between two prescriptions. Both are available at Optica Rwanda - ask our optometrists which suits your prescription and lifestyle at any Optica Rwanda branch.

Can I add modern digital and sun protection to my bifocals?

Yes. Optica Rwanda offers bifocal lenses with a range of coatings and treatments - including anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, UV protection, and photochromic options that darken in sunlight. You can also combine bifocal correction with blue light blocking for screen use. Ask at any Optica Rwanda branch about available add-ons for your bifocal glasses lenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to your most common questions

Can single vision glasses fix both reading difficulties and driving vision problems?

No. A single-vision lens is manufactured with just one consistent prescription power from corner to corner. If your eyes require distinct help for both reading and driving at the same time, you'll want to look at our progressive lenses page to see how multifocal zones function smoothly without lines. Optica Rwanda optometrists in Kigali can help determine which option fits your prescription.

Is there a difference between reading glasses and single-vision distance glasses?

Structurally, they are both single-vision lenses because they correct a single field of view. However, reading glasses are optimized exclusively for close-up tasks (approx. 40cm away), while distance glasses are calibrated to bring far objects (like road signs) into sharp focus. Book a free eye test at any Optica Rwanda branch to find out which you need.

How do blue block lenses protect my eyes during screen use?

Standard clear lenses let digital glare bypass the eye completely. Our blue block upgrade actively targets and traps high-energy blue-violet light waves before they cause eye strain, digital headaches, or disrupt your evening sleep cycle. Available as an add-on to single vision lenses at Optica Rwanda.

Can single vision technology be combined with other lens protections?

Absolutely. If you want a single pair of glasses for both the office and the outdoors, you can opt for our photochromic or hybrid upgrades. They keep your eyes completely shielded from computers indoors, and instantly shift into sunglasses outdoors - available at Optica Rwanda branches in Kigali.

How much do single vision glasses cost in Rwanda?

Optica Rwanda spectacles with single vision lenses start from RWF 21,900 (frame + lens), and eye tests are free after a one-time RWF 3,000 registration fee - after which eye tests are free for life at any Optica Rwanda branch.

How long does it take to adjust to new single vision glasses?

Most people adapt to new single vision lenses within a few days as their eyes get used to the updated prescription. If discomfort, blurriness, or headaches persist beyond a week, visit your nearest Optica Rwanda branch in Kigali for a free follow-up check and adjustment
