FAQ

  • How much does an eye test cost?

If you are a first time customer at Optica, registration will cost a one-time fee of RWF 1,000 and thereafter you are eligible for eye tests at no additional cost at any Optica branch.

If you only want to take your prescription it will cost RWF 8,000.

  • What happens during an eye test?

During an eye test, a professional Optometrist will assess your vision and the health of your eyes.

The eye test can take 15 minutes to an hour.

An eye test may include the following:

    1. Measuring your visual acuity: Ability to see details at different distances.
    2. Refraction Test: Performed to find the right prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
    3. Measuring the pressure in your eyes.

Additional tests may be performed based on your age, medical history and ongoing symptoms.

  • What should I bring to an eye test?

When you go to an eye test, it's a good idea to bring the following:

    1. Your insurance information and any paperwork related to your eye exam coverage.
    2. Your current glasses or contact lenses.
    3. Bring a list of any medication you're taking.
    4. Bring any previous test results for an eye exam if you've had one before.

Bringing this information with you can ensure your eye doctor has all the information to provide you with the best possible care.

  • How often should I have an eye test?

It is recommended to have an eye test every 1-2 years for adults aged 18-60.

Currently we are in the process of partnering with insurance companies.

  • What is the minimum age for an eye test?

We offer eye tests for individuals aged 7 years and above.

Children below 7 years require a specialised paediatric eye assessment, and we recommend visiting a qualified ophthalmologist. You may contact us for guidance on referral options, as we work with selected ophthalmologists.

Once you have the ophthalmologist’s prescription, you can visit any Optica branch and we will gladly assist you in selecting and processing suitable spectacles.

  • Can I get a prescription for glasses or contacts after an eye test?

Yes, you can get a prescription for glasses or contacts after an eye test.

The eye test will determine the need for vision correction, and the prescription will include the type and strength of the correction needed for each eye.

A prescription costs RWF 8000. However, if a new pair of spectacles is purchased from us using that prescription, we will provide the prescription for free.

If you already wear glasses or contacts, the Optometrist can update your prescription based on your eye test results.
